Beach Sprints and Sculling Successes
RGS Rowers have recently been in action at the Under 19 Beach Sprint Trials and English Beach Sprints as well as the Junior Sculling Regatta. Head of Rowing, Mr Tim Messent shares the following report:
Under 19 Beach Sprint Trials and English Beach Sprints
Olivia Hodgson represented RGS Worcester at the Under 19 GB Beach Sprints Trial in Bournemouth. After three time trials, Olivia was ranked 1st ahead of Wycliffe College and Evesham Rowing Club. Unfortunately, the weather called a halt to proceedings.
Olivia also raced in the English Beach Sprint Championships and after two time trials, a semi-final and a final achieved a bronze medal. This is a fantastic start to Olivia’s beach sprint rowing journey.
After her success in the Welsh Under 19 Mixed Double at the Home International Beach Sprints Regatta last summer, Menna Sutton was also trialing on Saturday in the senior category. Menna, who left RGS last summer, was ranked 8th overall which is an excellent result for an Under 23 athlete.
Junior Sculling Regatta
Last weekend saw a great day of racing at Eton Dorney for the National Junior Sculling Regatta. This year we entered two crews into the event comprising of a Women’s Junior 17 Double of Lucy Whiteley and Olivia Hodgson and a Women’s Junior 16 Double of Martha Colclough and Lottie Richardson.
In the time trials, which decided whether pupils would progress to a final, Martha and Lottie unfortunately missed out by five seconds and did not progress to the B final. It was an impressive achievement to achieve 13th place in this field but disappointing that they didn’t get a side-by-side race.
In the Women’s Junior 17 Double Olivia and Lucy placed first in the time trial with the nearest opposition 13 seconds behind them. This qualified them for the A final where they dominated throughout and ended up winning the event by 10 seconds.
