Digital Innovation in Ghana
Over Half term, Mr John Jones, Director of Innovation at The RGS Worcester Family of Schools, and Mr Richard Millard, Director of Studies at RGS The Grange travelled to Tongo in North-Eastern Ghana.
This visit marked a significant milestone in the ongoing partnership between the RGS Worcester Family of Schools and the Talensi Community Development Foundation, an initiative led by Juliana and Nick Parker from Worcestershire.
The visit to Tongo offered Mr Jones and Mr Millard the opportunity to live amongst the Chief’s family and gain first-hand insights into the community’s way of life. They also had the opportunity to spend three days working at both Tongo Senior High and Salvation Army Junior Schools, where they taught lessons, navigated large class sizes (Mr Millard teaching a class of 72!) and facilitated professional development sessions regarding the iPad 4s donated by RGS Worcester. These iPads are no longer functional on our systems so were donated to enhance teaching and learning and demonstrate digital workflows to their staff and pupils. Furthermore, Mr Jones and Mr Millard took part in a hotly contested game of football against Senior students which finished 0-0.
Their incredible experience was capped off by a special assembly that celebrated the partnership and visit with dancing, singing, and heartfelt speeches from pupils, staff and local dignitaries, highlighting the profound impact of the visit and deepening relationship between the schools.
Beyond the classrooms, historical landmarks like the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and the bustling Makola Market in Accra provided cultural insight and enrichment. As did visits to the Paga Slave Camp and crossing the Burkina Faso border.
The RGS Worcester Family of Schools is committed to deepening relationships with our partner schools in Ghana, exploring opportunities for pupil visits, finding collaborative projects while considering the challenges for future planning, and creating strategies to advance our joint project. The RGS Worcester community thanks the staff and students of Tongo Senior High and Salvation Army Junior Schools for their kindness and hospitality. We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Chief, the Parkers and the whole Talensi community for making Mr Jones and Mr Millard feel so welcome.
