Fencers are Victorious at Two Major Tournaments
Over the past few weeks, RGS Worcester Fencers have competed in two major tournaments: the Birmingham International Fencing Tournament and the 2023 British Youth Championships National Age Group Finals.
On Easter Sunday, RGS fencers participated in the Birmingham International Fencing Tournament held at Birmingham University. Lucas Hancock and Will Osborne competed in the Men’s Épée and finished 70th and 43rd, respectively. In the Women’s Épée, Zara Martin-Green finished 25th and was knocked out by Danielle Lawson, an RGS Alumna who went on to finish 5th. This was a significant improvement for Zara, who finished 82nd out of 89 in last year’s event. Danielle also competed in the British Senior Championships a week later, finishing in third place.
Over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, four of our fencers travelled to the England Institute of Sport in Sheffield to compete in the 2023 British Youth Championships National Age Group Finals. Issy Pottinger and Zara Martin-Green competed in the Under 14 Girls’ foil and Under 16 Girls’ Épée, respectively, while Matt Fallows and Lucas Hancock competed in the Under 18 Boys’ Épée.
On Sunday, Issy won three out of six pool fights and won her last 64 fight 15-7 before going out in the 32 to finish 25th. Zara won four out of five in the pool to be seeded 9th, earning her a bye through the 64. She won her last 32 and last 16 fights before losing in the quarters and finishing 7th. This was a significant achievement for Zara as she won her first British Youth Championships National medal.
On Monday, Issy won five out of six pool fights to be seeded 5th in the Under 14 Girls’ Épée. She earned a bye through the last 64 but was unfortunately knocked out in the last 32 by the eventual winner and finished a very credible 17th overall. Matt won one out of five in his pool and finished 44th, whilst Lucas won four out of six in his pool to be seeded 13th. He won his last 64 and last 32 fights before going out in the last 16 and finishing 12th.
Overall, it was a weekend of promising performances, learning, and fun for our fencers. The dedication and hard work of all the competitors bodes well for the future of fencing at RGS Worcester. We are proud of all our fencers and look forward to their continued success.
