About the Oak Award
The concept of the Oak Award arose from our commitment to holistic education. Akin to a mini Duke of Edinburgh award, it is designed to encourage your child to have a go, build resilience and develop in the round.
Your child will work towards the Oak Award in Year Five and Year Six. Our hope is that it will help your child to see themself as multi-dimensional, not just as sporty or creative, for example.
To achieve the award, your child must participate in the following across the two years:
- two physical activities or clubs
- two academic activities or clubs
- two performance-based clubs
- two House competitions
- one challenge outside their comfort zone, completed at home (recent examples include conquering a fear of spiders, climbing Snowdon, braving the zip wire, trying out for the cricket club, and doing a month of park runs)
- one community initiative (these have included cooking for incapacitated grandparents, raising money for charity, litter picking, planting wildflowers, and volunteering to read with Reception children)
Each year, roughly half of the year group completes the challenge and proudly receives the award on their final speech day.
