National Science Week at RGS
RGS Worcester held its annual Science ‘Eggstravaganza’ this week to celebrate British Science Week, which runs from 10 to 19 March. The ten-day event, organised by the British Science Association, is a nationwide celebration of science, technology, engineering, and maths, featuring exciting events and activities for all ages.
Pupils from RGS Springfield and RGS The Grange participated in Tuesday’s activities, while pupils from nine local primary schools joined in on Wednesday as part of the RGS Outreach Programme. Dr Howard Smith welcomed the pupils and explained the task. The pupils were challenged to design and construct a bridge capable of supporting a weight suspended from its centre using only papercraft straws, paperclips, string, and card. Groups were given 15 minutes to design and an hour to build their bridges.
Feedback from the event was really positive with Broadwas Primary School, which won the Primary Schools event, commenting “We loved it and we are very surprised at the win, It was great!” Pupils from Springfield commented “Thank you for having us, everyone enjoyed their visit and the bridge building activity. Our favourite things were lunch and getting to see more of RGS Worcester than we have before”.
Both events were incredibly successful and enjoyed by all participants. The winners of the Outreach ‘Eggstravaganza’ were as follows:
1st Place – Broadwas CofE Primary School
2nd Place – Pitmaston Primary School
3rd Place – St Georges CofE Primary School
Congratulations to all of the participants for their hard work and creativity during this exciting celebration of science. Thank you also to our teaching and support staff for facilitating this event. All participants left with a Certificate, a cream egg and a big smile!
