Celebrating International Women’s Day
This week at RGS Worcester we have celebrated International Women’s Day and, in so doing, have honoured our incredible female Senior Leadership Team Leaders: Academic Deputy Head Ms Rebecca Roberts-Gawen, Pastoral Deputy Head, Mrs Juiliana Ateyo, and Assistant Head (Designated Safeguarding Lead), Mrs Sofia Nicholls. These women form part of our Senior Leadership Team, and all play vital roles at RGS Worcester.
Observed around the world on 8 March, International Women’s Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women – and challenges gender bias and inequality. International Women’s Day is powered by the collective efforts of all and is intended to make a positive difference for women.
On this year’s International Women’s Day, the Government announced that girls must be granted equal access to all school sports, following a campaign launched by the England Women’s Football team after their European Championship triumph last summer. At RGS Worcester, we are proud of our commitment to Girls’ Sport and the development of programmes which facilitate, empower and inspire more girls in our RGS community to take part in sport, and look after their physical and mental wellbeing.
These opportunities include ‘Superball’, the annual Senior Netball fixture between RGS Worcester and King’s School, which is a spectacular event that we celebrated last month in which we sold out the University of Worcester Arena in what is a fantastic showcase for Girls’ sport. This event followed the Girls’ Hockey ‘Severn Shield’ match last term.
Hockey at RGS Worcester has gone from strength to strength this year. Our Senior Girls’ Hockey players have been privileged to play the annual King’s fixture in front of increasing crowds and this year RGS launched the first ever ’Severn Shield’ match, bringing the competition onto the level of the Modus ‘Challenge Cup’, ‘Superball’ and the Football ‘Challenge Cup’. Our Senior Hockey players have excelled themselves in the 1st XI National Semi-Final Cup and although we have seen success in the Plate Competition in previous years, this is the furthest an RGS Senior team has made it in the England Hockey Championships. It really is an outstanding achievement of which the Senior Girls should be proud.
In the Trinity term we look forward to Girls Cricket at RGS Worcester which has continued to develop. Pupils from all Year groups have had the opportunity to play in a variety of training and fixtures. With the addition of Mr Fell this term we have been working hard to improve the programme for the Girls to advance their skills.
We are also proud of the development of Girls’ Rugby and Girls’ Football at RGS Worcester. Girls’ Football is increasingly popular among pupils and this week saw fixtures take place against Nunnery Wood. This Sport is flourishing at RGS and gives an even greater opportunity for Girls to express their talents and develop their footballing core skills. Girls’ Rugby is also flourishing and the Girls’ Rugby team will soon be taking part in the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens Competition. Rosslyn Park is the world’s largest school Rugby tournament with over 10,000 Boys and Girls aged 11 to 18 years competing. We wish our Girls all the very best at this prestigious national tournament.
On International Women’s Day, and every day, we strive to celebrate the unique and invaluable contributions of each one of our female teachers and staff, our pupils and Alumnae. We are grateful for the unique and invaluable contributions made by all.
