Fundraising Concert Raises Over £2,000 for Ukrainian Charity
On Monday 30 January, more than 100 guests gathered in Perrins Hall at RGS Worcester for a memorable fundraising concert organised by Year Ten pupil, Sasha Penlington. The concert raised over £2,000 for ‘Збережи Дитину’ (Save a Child), a charity dedicated to supporting children affected and displaced by the war in Ukraine.
The charity relies heavily on donations to provide temporary care homes for those who have been displaced, supporting them with therapy, food, clothes, and many other essentials, as well as helping families to retrieve important documents required to leave the country and find new places to live.
Sasha comments, “My family in Ukraine were surprised by Russia’s attack and were one of many families who fled to safety, leaving my uncle and many other brave men to fight for their country either literally or through the resilience of trying to keep important businesses open. Since then, homes have been destroyed and families have been torn apart, and some parts of the beautiful country of Ukraine have been completely obliterated”.
To raise funds for this important charity Sasha arranged for over 20 of her fellow musicians to perform. The Penlington family also provided traditional Ukrainian food for the concert interval. The concert featured music-making by pupils from Year Seven to the Upper Sixth, completed by a performance from professional violinist Hannah Roper.
“I wanted to arrange the concert to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine and at the same time raise much-needed funds for our chosen charity,” said organiser Sasha. “By raising over £2,000, we hope this concert has in some small way achieved both objectives”.
The success of the event was testament to the talent and generosity of the students and the community’s commitment to supporting charitable causes. The funds raised will hopefully make a difference to the lives of children in Ukraine affected by the ongoing conflict.
Headmaster Mr John Pitt comments, “I would like to congratulate Sasha, her family and all the pupils who participated in this moving, fundraising event. We are immensely proud of our pupils for their dedication to making a positive impact in the world. Thank you also to all those who attended the concert and to everyone who has donated; your contributions are greatly appreciated”.
