RGS Worcester Transports Hollymount School Pupils to Ancient Greece and Rome
On Wednesday 30 November, 50 pupils from Hollymount School visited RGS Worcester to immerse themselves in a morning of Classics, finding about ancient Greece and Rome.
Teacher of Classics, Mr Ben Tanner, dressed up as a Roman centurion to welcome our pupils, who explored a little Classical Civilisation, including Ancient Greek and Roman coins, and also had the chance to design their own Greek and Roman coins. They enjoyed an introduction to Latin, learning how to sing Old MacDonald in their newly discovered language.
The Classics department explained that studying their subject not only illuminates the past but is entirely relevant to the present. Pupils who study Classics will increase their analytical and critical thinking skills as they examine and analyse the differences between the ancient and the modern worlds, looking from a different perspective at ideas which we take for granted: our politics, our laws, art, drama and much more.
Let’s hope this taster has inspired a future generation to take an active interest in studying Classical Civilisation and how this influence pervades our everyday lives.
