‘Sixth Former for a Day’
On Tuesday, pupils in Year Eleven had the opportunity to become ‘Sixth Formers for a day’. Pupils experienced what life is like in the Sixth Form, trialling lessons and new subject choices while also getting to experience Gordon House, our designated Sixth Form Centre, and ‘Joe’s’, the Sixth Form café.
The day provided valuable insight for Year Eleven pupils into how A Levels and BTEC/ CTEC studies differ from their current academic work at GCSE. Pupils were able to gain a flavour of the breadth of opportunity and support on offer in the Sixth Form at RGS Worcester, and an awareness of the host of Co-curricular activities available and award-winning Careers guidance.
Many attended lessons of new subjects available in the Sixth Form in order to understand what these offer (for example, Business, Economics, Philosophy, Politics, Psychology, BTEC National Diploma in Sport, CTEC Business).
This experience forms part of the programme to prepare our Year Eleven pupils for the important transition after GCSE and being a ‘Sixth Former for a day’ was followed by the Subject Choices Evening for the pupils and their parents. Following an introduction by Mr Mark Evetts, Head of Sixth Form, about making subject choices, Mrs Audrey Williams spoke about Careers support and then pupils and parents were able to choose subject presentations given by Heads of Department. There was also information about the Extended Project Qualification or EPQ which is worth half an A level and introduces students to research-based study similar to following a university course.
With so many subjects to choose from and a breadth of opportunity ahead of them, pupils were excited about the prospect of choosing the subjects they love and studying these in greater depth in the Sixth Form.
