Alumni Golf in Ruud Health
After a two-year Covid-19 enforced absence, it was wonderful to gather former pupils together for the RGS alumni annual golf day at the Worcester Golf and Country Club.
A number of alumni were participating for the first time and with David Oseman (1948-54) and Ben Selby (2009-18) playing, the alumni present spanned an incredible 70 years of schooling at RGS. After coffee and bacon rolls it was time to get down to the serious business at hand. The sun was shining, the sky was blue and the course was in fabulous condition making it the perfect day for golf.
The competition format enabled old classmates to play together and for new friendships to be established, while the Stableford scoring system ensured the day was keenly contested to the final hole. Ed Bacon (1972-79) and Simon Secretan (1976-83) were worthy winners of the Biggs Rodway Quaich with 45 points in the pairs competition. They just pipped David Perkins & Keith Price who bagged 44 points, closely followed by David Owen & Tony Sanders on 43 points, Sam Humphrey & Andy Baker on 42 points and Jonathan Lee & David Veale on 41 points. The other pairs all scored very creditably in the high 30s.
The Old Elizabethan’s Golf Cup is awarded to the best gross score and this year’s champion was Ruud Hercik (1996-09) with a score of 70, which is par for the course. Ruud is possibly the most talented golfer to have attended RGS with every facet of his game a joy to behold. He is a PGA professional at the Vale of Evesham Golf Club where Ben Selby is also working towards his PGA accreditation. RGS has truly shaped Ruud’s life for as well as being in the inaugural intake at RGS The Grange in 1996, he met his wife, Felicity nee Atkinson (2005-09) while they were at the School together.
Other prizes were awarded on the day with Keith Price winning ‘Closest to the Pin’ and Simeon Chapman bagging the ‘Longest Drive’. Planning is already underway for the 2023 event which promises to be even bigger.
