A Fantastic Year of Fencing
I am delighted to report that on Sunday 19 June a number of RGS fencers travelled to Bromsgrove, to take part in the Bromsgrove Prep Épée competition.
Isabel Pottinger, Oliver Jukes, Ethan Taylor, Callum Munday, Gabby Benbow all took part in the mixed Year Seven and Eight event.
Isabel Pottinger finished 7th despite sustaining an injury to her sword arm in the second round. Oliver Jukes and Ethan Taylor got very similar results finishing 10th and 11th respectively. Callum Munday finished 16th with Gabby Benbow finishing in 18th place and getting a medal for being top of her second round pool.
This excellent news comes just a few weeks after Lower Sixth student, Lucas Hancock travelled to the England Institute of Sport in Sheffield to take part in the British Senior Championships. Lucas fenced in the Men’s Épée where he won three and lost three in his pool. This was enough to get him through the 30% cut, to get to the Direct Elimination, where he went out 15-7, to finish a fantastic 77th, out of 121 competitors.
Also attending this event were alumnae Danielle Lawson and Abi Watkins, who formed part of the ‘Malvern Women’s Épée team’, that went on to win the ‘Women’s Team Épée’ event at the same 2022 British Championships.
The future of RGS Fencing looks good with seven fencers from RGS The Grange, also competing in the younger age groups.
Well done to everyone for a fantastic year of Fencing.
Mr Nick Chapman
Fencing Coach
