Lower Sixth visit ‘What Career? & What University Live’
Last Friday, Lower Sixth RGS pupils were invited to visit the ‘What University What Career Live’ show at the NEC, as part of their Sixth Form Enrichment programme. The event was a tremendous opportunity for students to meet and speak to a wide range of universities, leading employers and Degree Apprenticeship providers. Bath, Exeter, Oxford, Reading, Birmingham, Liverpool, Cardiff, Swansea and Warwick universities sparked the interest of our students and the day provided the chance for detailed in-depth discussions. Creative Alliance, Waterbear, The College of Music and BIMM were also in attendance, offering options in the Creative Arts sectors.
There were informative talks on offer too, covering subjects such as ‘Applying to Oxbridge’ led by an Oxford Admissions Tutor, as well as a panel session on ‘Degree Apprenticeships’, which provided a useful insight into the variation of degree apprentice experiences between JP Morgan, Jaguar Land Rover, NHS and CBRE.
Various occupational sectors including; JP Morgan, CBRE, NHS Health Careers and Jaguar Land Rover were also represented at the event, as was the RAF, whose stand was certainly the most interactive and provided virtual reality headsets to simulate the experience of flying – which certainly proved very popular with our students!
After the end of a busy and informative day, one student commented “The event was really beneficial, particularly as it provided an opportunity to compare and an overview of different universities in one place.”
As well as an enjoyable day out, the ‘What Career? & What University Live’ event was incredibly valuable for our Lower Sixth students, especially at this key stage in their lives, whilst they are considering and planning for life beyond RGS. We now very much look forward to the RGS Careers and Higher Education EXPO on 7 April which will develop these conversations further and to which all RGS pupils are invited.
