Excitement builds for ‘Billy Elliot’ Production
Excitement is mounting for the forthcoming School Production of ‘Billy Elliot’ with opening night now just a few weeks away and as the first in-person School Drama Production since the pandemic, the show also represents a long awaited return of ‘live’ theatre to the School’s stunning Performing Arts Centre.
The Musical tells the story of a boy from a coal mining village in northeast England who transcends class and circumstance to become a ballet star.
The show is certainly on track to ‘wow’ audiences with our young performers’ excellent and energetic dancing, singing and acting skills. The 39 strong cast of actors and dancers is accompanied by a band of eight talented RGS musicians, along with 14 crew providing backstage assistance. All have been working incredibly hard and have shown great commitment to the show, rehearsing on average 6-7 hours each week. Our young performers and crew are thrilled to be able to welcome audiences to their show and cannot wait to perform.
Ben Sears who plays the lead role of Billy, said: “I have been in several theatre productions before, both inside and outside of school, but my most recent performance with RGS was as ‘Enjolras’ in the Senior Production of Les Mis. It will be a great experience for all of us to get onto the stage again – I hope you enjoy the show!”
Rosie Greenwood who plays Grandma, said: “I am in my final year at RGS, and I am so thrilled to be playing the role of Grandma. I have loved working with such an amazing cast to put this show together, and am so grateful finally to be back on the stage performing! I hope you enjoy the show as much as I have enjoyed every minute of rehearsals!”
Grace Odell who plays Miner 12 commented: “After the craziness of 2020 I am so excited to be able to perform in ‘Billy Elliot’. Like others I’ve missed the buzz of backstage and rehearsals and cannot wait for you all to see us on stage once more.”
Nick Kaleniuk who plays Mr Wilknison / Miner 2 said: “I’m really looking forward to performing in Billy Elliot in my second senior production. I’ve missed performing over the last year so I can’t wait to get back on stage with the rest of the cast.”
Director of Drama and Artistic Director, Mrs Jilly Witcomb added: “I am overwhelmed yet again with the talent, commitment, enthusiasm and passion of our students and my sincere thanks goes to all of the cast, crew, choreographer and musicians for their incredible hard work.”
