Thompson Family Sporting Success
The Thompson family of RGS Worcester are known to their peers and teachers, for their athletic prowess and dominance of the classroom with Seb and younger sister Izzy set for stardom!
Seb Thompson, who is currently in the first year of a professional contract with Derby County FC and an England Age Group international, has endured two years of highs and lows. With the pandemic and several early injuries impacting his game time, Seb has returned to full fitness and became a regular in the Under 18 and Under 23 squads, all whilst making a cameo appearance, albeit on the bench, in Derby’s FA Cup Round 3 tie last season. Seb’s hard work over the past two years was not only rewarded with the professional contract, but also saw him attain a triple Distinction Star in his BTEC course along with an A grade in AS Economics that he completed with the help of staff here at RGS.
Adding to recent successes, Seb’s younger sister, Izzy Thompson is currently reaching for the (Severn) Stars! As a squad member of the local Severn Stars Nova Academy based around Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, Izzy attended six weeks of trials during May and June and competed against other girls all with the same goal of making the 20-person squad of gifted Netballers.
The School is delighted to announce that Izzy made the cut and is part of the group of 12 main squad players, with 8 further trialists chosen to be training partners. Since this wonderful news, Izzy has absolutely grabbed the opportunity, by attending twice weekly training sessions during the summer break in Gloucester and Worcester, at the end of which she was selected as Captain of the squad!
With the Captain selected and team prepped, the team travelled to Loughborough University last Thursday where the School Games were being held. The School Games are a national-level sporting event where the very best athletes all compete in a ‘mini-Olympics’ style tournament.
The tournament was highly competitive. After seven matches over three days the team narrowly missed out on a place in the semi-final due to goal difference. Izzy’s contribution to the team was fantastic and she enjoyed every second.
With academic attainment in high order and sporting stardom all to come, it looks very much as if the Thompson dynasty is in very safe hands with both Izzy and Seb!
