RGS Worcester Wows on the Water

RGS Worcester Boat Club returned to racing this weekend at the Worcester Junior Regatta.

The event was developed by the West Midlands Regional Rowing Council to support the return to Junior rowing locally and the day consisted of two divisions – starting with a time trial followed by a 400m side by side sprint.

First to power up the course from Diglis to the Boathouse were the Open J18 Quad. Buoyed by a strong start, the Quad were ranked second fastest on the day, just five seconds behind their opposition from King’s School Worcester and in the side-by-side racing, the RGS Worcester Quad lost out by just two feet.

Strong performances were delivered by both of the Open J15 Coxed Quads and all the rowers returned to the landing stage with big smiles on their faces. The Women’s J16 Quad worked hard and this paid off with a time of 07:13, placing them second in their boat class.

From four in a boat to one, the next boats up the course were Upper Sixth pupils. The course was not easy to navigate in a single scull but both scullers appeared to do this with ease. After a difficult year with the pandemic it was particularly pleasing to see the students looking so composed in their Singles.

To round off the First Division time trial the Women’s J14 Quad took to the stage. This was their first ever race and they were cheered on by the enthusiastic RGS supporters on the towpath.

Division Two saw some fantastic rowing, with RGS pupils raising their game and all should be extremely proud of their performance. 

Overall, this event provided an excellent opportunity to return to racing for the rowers. The whole coaching team were proud to see the rowers demonstrate how they have developed over the course of this year. Racing will continue at the start of the next academic year and it will be exciting to see how our RGS rowers progress.
