Home Book Club
The Home School Book Club has been set up for current members from both Year Seven and Year Eight RGS book clubs during lockdown and the resulting remote learning period. It has also welcomed new members keen to try the Club during this period of remote learning.
The first challenge set was to create an interesting picture of themselves reading during Lockdown and the Easter holiday. It was called:
#mylockdownlitpic – exploring 3 reading Ws (put simply: my lockdown literature picture).
The photograph was to show their current book being read somewhere interesting or unusual. They were asked to include the following information:
#mylockdownlitpic
What? (What are you reading and who is the author?)
Where? (Where are you reading?)
When? (When was the photo of you reading taken?)

Staff were then invited to join the challenge and a slide show of all entries was compiled and shared with the book club this week. Commendations are being awarded to all the students who submitted entries; there were some fabulous pictures created.
The Home School Book Club members were also encouraged to join in with a national reading event run by the Reading Agency and held on 23 April: worldbooknight.org and members of the RGS Community might be interested in discovering more about the national #ReadingHour.
As we moved into the second week of Trinity term, the Book Club meeting was attended by over 30 Lower School pupils via Google Meet. We watched the slideshow together, voted for our favourite lockdownlitpic entry before being set the second lockdown challenge: a video book review. Pupils are being encouraged to produce a short two-minute video recommending a book that everyone should be reading in lockdown. The first video entries have already been submitted and I must say, the standard is extremely high! Nothing beats a great recommendation from a fellow student.
It has been encouraging to see such enthusiasm for sharing books and a love of reading and the School looks forward to a surge in reading for pleasure amongst our current pupils through the remaining remote learning period and beyond. Any Year Seven or Year Eight student keen to participate and not yet a member should contact Mrs Houchin (sah@rgsw.org.uk). New members are always welcome.
